Working at The Healing Center has given me a front-row seat to something I once only hoped was possible: genuine life transformation.
Every man who walks through our doors arrives carrying something heavy. For most, it’s the weight of addiction. For others, it’s years of buried pain, broken relationships, guilt, shame, or the feeling that life has drifted them far from the man they hoped to become.
In my addiction, those were all things I struggled with. To find sobriety, I learned that I couldn’t just fix the addictive behaviors. I also had to be honest with myself about what was driving my addiction. The same is true for every other recovering addict.
That’s why the men who come to The Healing Center are challenged to slow down and look inward. In a world that often encourages men to suppress emotion and “push through,” it’s easy to ignore the hurts, habits, and patterns that shape our lives. To combat the pain this causes, we use thoughtful curriculum, conversations, group support, and spiritual reflection to help men recognize the roots of their struggles so that they can overcome their demons rather than succumb to them.
At first, this process can be extremely uncomfortable. But by the end of it, men find a freedom unlike anything they’ve ever experienced before.
For many, the most meaningful part of the journey is spiritual. A large number of the men who come here rediscover, or discover for the first time, a personal relationship with Christ. Through prayer, study, and reflection, they begin to understand that they do not have to carry life’s burdens alone. The message of surrender is not about giving up; it is about placing the weight of their past, their failures, their fears, and their future into God’s hands.
By the time our residents prepare to leave, they often have a renewed sense of identity and purpose. Many begin to recognize that their lives have a unique meaning and that even their struggles can become part of a larger story of redemption.
